Abstract

The research based on the Appraisal Theory by Martin and White (2005) describes and contrasts the authors’ stance and engagement with the potential readers of 36 EURO 2020 football predictions in Vietnamese and English. The findings show that the percentage of Heterogloss in Vietnamese and in English is 59% and 61,7% respectively. This result has proved a rather high level of communcation between the writers and their potential readers. Regarding the use of the evaluative language, the authors of football predictions in English use rhetorical questions to offer opportunities for readers to assess the information while the authors of English football predictions do not. In addition to the similarities and peculiarities just mentioned, between the two types of football identification documents in English and Vietnamese, there are similarities and differences, which are discussed in this article.
