SEMANTIC FIELDS OF THE WORD NƯỚC (WATER) IN VIETNAMESE

Abstract

The article presents the statistical results – numbers and frequencies of occurrence of the words related to “nước” from 13 diferent sources including novels, short stories, proverbs poems, which are then categorized into fields, subfields and groups of words. Several interpretations and comparisons of frequencies of the words belonging to subfields and groups of words are suggested in an attempt to show the systematism and hierarchy and the diversity of words in semantic fields of “nước” in Vietnamese. The semantic fields of “nước” consist of a great many words with their high frequencies of occurrence, which indicates its significance in the view of Vietnamese people.
