This study focused on examining how second-year English-majored students used collocations in their writings. Firstly, by reviewing 35 argumentative essays and interviewing 4 Writing lecturers, the results show that students use collocations with a notable frequency. They have a tendency of using noun + verb and adjective + noun types more than verb + noun and noun + noun types. Secondly, it is indicated that there was a great imbalance between the quality of the students’ uses of these types. Thirdly, during the interviews, the lecturers also suggested the causes of collocation errors and some recommendations for practice and future research.
