A STUDY ON THE TRANSLATION INTO VIETNAMESE OF CULTURE-SPECIFIC ITEMS IN THE NOVEL TO KILL A MOCKING BIRD

Nguyễn Khánh, Trương Bạch Lê

Abstract

This study analyzes the translation into Vietnamese of culture-specific items of proper names and common expressions in the novel To Kill a Mocking Bird. Both qualitative and quantitative methods were employed to conduct the study, and the data gathered provide insights into the pattern of translation strategies, including preservation, addition, omission, globalization, localization and transformation. Of 345 culture-specific items found, 265 are proper names, 80 are common expressions. The results indicate that all of these six strategies were applied by the translators to different extents. The most frequently used strategy is preservation, whereas the least frequently employed strategy is omission.
