Collocations are an important indicator of learners' foreign language proficiency, but they cause many difficulties in learning and using them. This study explores the habits of learning and using collocations in writing by surveying 95 2nd-year students from the Faculty of English - Hue University of Foreign Languages. The findings are that the group of students with good writing results often have effective habits of learning and using collocations, such as proactively learning the collocations by themselves. They eagerly search for their desired topical collocations before any writing task and know how to select and check the naturalness of the collocations used. The study offers some suggestions to serve as a reference basis for teaching and learning collocations.
